Duke
of Edinburgh success at QES
Y10 and Y11 pupils at Queen Elizabeth School have the opportunity to develop
their skills by taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Pupils have to
use teamwork and initiative, working together on expeditions to achieve a common
goal and many pupils at the school have had their hard work and commitment rewarded.
Duke of Edinburgh dignitaries and the Mayor, Councillor Richard Meredith helped the pupils celebrate their achievements in an awards ceremony held at Atherstone Town Hall.
Staff that organise the Duke of Edinburgh scheme at QES watched with pride as past and present pupils received their Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
Pupils that should be congratulated are: Joseph Bates, Chris Burns, Jake Cardall, Trudy Duignan, Kristy Harding, Sophie Perret, Sophie Wardle, Michael Burns, Adam Gretton, James Shuttler, Chris Reid and Nathan Sweet.
Mrs Shiv Ressell said “the pupils have to work so hard to achieve these awards and they give up a lot of their spare time after school and at weekends. They are developing skills that will stand them in good stead for their future. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with all of these individuals and wish them well with their next Award!”
Masters
at Mental Mathematics
Y10 students from Queen Elizabeth School Atherstone have shown their excellence
in Mathematics by taking part in the University of Leeds UK Mathematics Challenge.
The Challenge which was taken by over 195,00 students nationally consists of
25 logic type questions which have to be answered in an hour. Top students receive
bronze, silver or gold awards.
This year, 9 students from the school reached the met the highest standards for these awards. Chris Smith, Thomas Elton, Danielle Bassan, Ann Brownbridge, Isaac Cassidy and Aphra Tulip all received bronze certificates for their efforts, Stuart Stringer excelled with a silver award and two students Sam Manger and Thomas Millichamp struck Gold!
As if this wasn’t good enough, Sam Manger did so well that he has been invited to take part in the European Challenge. Headteacher Tony Wilmot said “I am so proud of all of the students that took part and special congratulations go to these students whose ability has been recognised by the bronze, silver and gold awards. I would like to wish Sam Manger the best of luck in the European Challenge. We will all be routing for him!”
Y8 students at the school are trying their luck in a similar Junior Challenge in April. Hopefully they will do just as well!

After a keenly fought first half they found themselves 1-0 down but managed to pick themselves up during half time for an exciting second half!
In the second half, QE levelled the score through an outstanding strike from Lloyd Storey. Diana,
Princess of Wales Memorial Award
QES is delighted
to announce that not just one but 20 of its pupils have been chosen to receive
the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award for their outstanding commitment
to the school and local community.
The pupils all belong to either the School Council at QES or the Eco School’s committee and they work tirelessly to improve the school putting the pupil voice forward. They represent all year groups, meeting fortnightly to discuss ideas and implement plans. The groups have been involved in many events this year for example, they have introduced a new school uniform, paper recycling scheme and have worked closely with Warwickshire County Council to improve the quality of school meals and drugs education. They are currently designing a garden on the school grounds which they hope will raise awareness of green issues and are organising lots of fund raising events.
Teacher, Rebecca Watson says “I work closely with both of these groups of pupils and they never cease to amaze me. Their energy, enthusiasm and total dedication makes them a joy to work with. These pupils have gone out of their way to drive this school forward and they are superb role models for other pupils. I am extremely proud of them”. Headteacher Tony Wilmot is just as impressed “20 of our pupils achieving this prestigious award just goes to show the excellent calibre of pupils that we have at our school. This is a good example of how students and staff can work together to achieve excellence”.

RAF
visit QES
On 20th June, sixty Y9 learners from Queen Elizabeth school Atherstone were
visited by an RAF Outreach team who took them through their paces! They worked
with the students to help them to develop life skills, communication and motivation
through problem solving and team building. All of these skills should stand
them in good stead for their future life after school! One of the groups that
the RAF taught were rated as being in the top ten of all the schools that they
visited.
The group have now been set the challenge of organising a football skills tournament to raise money for developing an eco friendly school garden. Mr David Beckitt one of the teachers who will be pitting his football skills against the boys said “It was an extremely enjoyable day!”
Y7
Humanities Field Trip
Pupils in Y7 at Queen Elizabeth School Atherstone stepped back in time when
they visited Kenilworth Castle on a Humanities field trip. The whole year group
toured the castle, completing Geography surveys of the grounds and tourism in
the area. To top the trip off they also had the amazing opportunity of seeing
an archaeological dig being carried out and were able to peruse the findings.
To enhance their History Curriculum, pupils learnt about what life was like in Medieval times as they went around a Medieval village and were shown how to make floor tiles and their own timber houses trying out techniques that would have been used at the time. They even got to strike their own money and left a little richer with a “groat” each!
Head of Humanities Mr David Beckitt said, “The trip was a huge success as it helped the pupils to visualise all of the work that they have done in lessons. We were really pleased that we got a chance to visit the archaeological dig, bringing history to life!”
Gifted
and Talented Visit
On Monday 19th June, Y7 students at QES visited the National Space Centre in
Leicester and had a fantastic day.
They were the first school to trial new computer software and task cards in the simulated space mission called “Rendezvous with a Comet”. Half of the students were based in mission control and were given tasks to monitor what was happening in the space shuttle that the other half of the students was in! To get into the role, students were dressed up in space aprons as they tackled tasks covering a range of enterprise skills such as teamwork, perseverance and problem solving.
The outcome was that a new comet was discovered and named the QE comet much to the students delight. At one point in this virtual reality, survival looked improbable as the oxygen levels in the space shuttle fell dangerously low. However, the team at mission control analysed the data and solved the problem with less than two minutes to spare!
The students were keen to answer questions and were totally absorbed in their mission. The verdict from one student was that “It was wicked!”
This was a superb day, which the students and staff all thoroughly enjoyed. The students learnt so much. Thanks to all of the staff involved at the Space Centre.
3M
Challenge Award Winners
Nine students from QES Atherstone took part in the 3M Challenge Award on 21st
June and beat off stiff competition from local schools Polesworth and Kingsbury
to
become
the winners. The competition was hosted at QE and students from Y7-9 had to use
their engineering and teamwork skills to design their own version of the Millenium
Wheel and did so mainly out of paper! They went on to produce a smaller scale
working model which was motorised before finishing the day with a power point
presentation to representatives of 3M. Mr Brian Harris. Head of Technology at
the school was exceptionally pleased. “This was a hard task and the students
were superb. They certainly showed that they have what it takes in the field of
engineering.” Thanks must go to the organisers 3M for such a fantastic opportunity
and to the other schools involved.
